“Second Wave” New Family Ancestry Program

The Carroll County Historical Museum has initiated a companion family history program to First Families of Carroll County. The new program is titled “Second Wave.”  It honors the second wave of settlers who helped build Carroll County through commerce, education, and the development of towns and villages.  These great ancestors helped to position Carroll County to move forward to the turn of the century and into the machine age.

The “Second Wave” program will encourage families to research and preserve their family lineage for future generations.  Members will have their names listed in the booklet of the Annual Old Settlers Meeting held each August.   To qualify for membership as a “Second Wave” family, you must provide documented evidence that your earliest Carroll County ancestor in that line resided in Carroll County, Indiana, sometime between August 2, 1855, and December 31, 1900.  A direct line from the applicant to the pioneer ancestor must be proven at each step, including the spouse in each generation, and all documents must include full citation.  This lineage will be included in the permanent genealogy collection of the Carroll County Historical Museum.

Applications for the “Second Wave” program are available in the Museum, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Wednesdays 8 a.m. - noon.  The Museum also contains many resources for genealogy research.  The staff is always available to assist researchers with information.  The application and information is also available on our web site at Second Wave Information.

  Oral History Project
The staff and volunteers of the Museum are starting an Oral History Project to help preserve the stories and memories of long-time Carroll County residents.  The purpose of this project is to preserve and collect 20th-century history through the medium of first-person testimony.  Eventually we hope to have many of these interviews available on the Museum web site.  We have applied for grant monies to purchase the necessary digital recording and transcription equipment.

Photo Archives Receives New Look
Check out the new look of our Photo Archive web portal. The easy-to-use interface now allows you to search the same term simultaneously in multiple fields  to improve retrieval of photographs from our collection of more than 15,000 in the archives. An advanced search screen has also been added that allows you to search specific fields and to use Boolean "or" search capability. Either search returns a list of the photographs that meet the criteria entered. Clicking on the number link brings up the photograph and its complete description from the database. Clicking on the photo opens it in a separate window generally as an enlarged image. It can be increased in size once more by clicking on the icon that appears in the lower right-hand corner of the picture when you hover there with the mouse cursor.
